General Archeological Information
The archaeological site of Monastiraki occupies the top and slopes of a low hill overlooking the Asomatos valley and Platys river, between the west side of Mount Ida and the Samitos hill at the eastern foot of Mount Kedros. The site, which controls the natural route connecting Crete’s north and south coasts, might be identified as the town of Sukirita/Subrita mentioned in Linear A and B texts. Germans excavated the site illicitly during WWII. Systematic excavations by the University of Crete began in 1980 and revealed a large building complex of the Protopalatial period with all the basic characteristics of the Cretan palatial centres, including large storerooms in all four of the excavation sectors. There is a monumental building whose façade displays the insets and projections typical of Protopalatial palaces and which comprised formal apartments, a room with a column and evidence for religious rituals, open courts, and a huge terrace wall, which are still being excavated. A large number of sealings, found in three different areas, confirm the building’s palatial character, since they suggest the presence of a centrally organized administration, which had access to and controlled the distribution of production here. Archaeological evidence demonstrates that Monastiraki depended on the Phaistos palace and functioned as a Phaistian outpost in the Amari province. The number of excavated storerooms is impressive, larger that anywhere in Crete, including the great Minoan palaces. Produce was kept inside large pithoi lining the storeroom walls and standing in doorways together with smaller storage jars. Specialized cooking areas with ovens and, possibly, braziers were also identified. The remains of a pottery kiln indicate that at least some of the vases were produced in situ. Room 3, one of the centre’s largest storerooms, was surrounded by rooms related to religious practices. The site was probably destroyed by fire after the great earthquake of c. 1700 BC and abandoned. Part of the hill was reoccupied in the Hellenistic period.
