General Archeological Information
LMIII tombs have been found at the area. Of interest is the venetian castle of Liopetro, built during the 17th century. The name might have come from Leon di Petra. The proposal for the castle's building was done in 1579 from Gaicomo Foscarini, who suggested that the area would be an ideal refuge for the inhabitants of Siteia. The proposal was refrazed by Petro Zano in 1590 and Scotti in 1595 and finally the Senatus ordered the foundation of the castle in the early 17th century. The castle could shelter up to 6000 people. There are indications that it was built on an ancient fortress, a cistern of which is still obvious.
