General Archeological Information
The small island, which is 150m. αway from the shore, seems to have been connected with it during the Bronze Age, forming a peninsula with a port to each side of the narrow isthmus. Due to its location Mochlos was an important minoan trade centre. Systematic research in the area uncovered 6 habitation periods, from EMIB to the 13th century A.D. At the southern part of the island, which is closer to the mainland, extent the remnants of a large MM - LM settlement. The settlement was again inhabited during the Classical period. One of the most important is Building B2, which had at least 3 storeys. A square room, at the groundfloor, had a pillar, so as a broad window at the east side of the building. From the upper storey of the same room, which was possibly a pillarcrypt sanctuary, came a number of typical objects like the head of a female figurine, part of a clay model of a small ship, a pear-shaped rhyton and a kind of stone phallos. The house had a 13-step staircase, in excellent condition, which leeded to the central room of the upper floor. The use of this room, which had a green schist floor and a number of doors at the walls, so as the bases of 2 columns, is not yet clear. Of great interest are the MM tombs that were uncovered by Seager in 1908. They were at the slope of the hill at the western part of the island, and judging from the golden jewellery and diadems they contained, they must have belonged to wealthy families. Among the findings there were a number of sealstones and a silver cylindrical seal from Mesopotamia, dated to the period of Sargon of the Accadian dynasty, stone vases and double votive axes. From the remnants of the LMIIIB period impressive is the stone-paved road. The collection of stone vases of Mochlos is considered to be one of the most important of the Minoan Period. The materials used are steatite in various colors (green, black, grey), marble, alabaster and limestone. Remarkable is a golden ring, which shows a naked deity sitted in a ship, that is moving away from a small building at a rocky coast, with hands forming the gesture of farewell. The prow of the ship is horseshaped and the stern is fishshaped. At the northern part of the island exist the remnants of the roman fortification wall. In some parts the Early-Christian settlement (Roman according to Seager) covers the Neopalatial. Partly walls of the 7th century A.D. are based on walls of the 16th century B.C.
